About MPJA

The Muslim Professional Japan Association (MPJA) is a general incorporated association based in Yotsuya, Shinjuku, Tokyo, founded on 23 January 2013. Led by its president Akmal Bin Abu Hassan, a Malaysian entrepreneur with long experience in Japan, the body certifies Japanese companies that want to sell halal products at home and export them to Muslim markets.

MPJA audits against its own halal standard, drawn up in line with the standards of Malaysia’s JAKIM and Indonesia’s BPJPH, and an in-house fatwa committee makes the final ruling on every certification. Its scopes cover food and beverages, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, consumer goods, slaughterhouses, and logistics, alongside a separate Muslim Friendly certification for restaurants and hotels in Japan. For products bound for Indonesia, clients must also implement the SJPH halal product assurance system, and certification can be issued for individual production lines where a whole site cannot qualify.

The association is a member of the World Halal Food Council and lists mutual recognition partners across Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas, including BPJPH in Indonesia and CICOT in Thailand, so certified exporters can enter those markets without re-certification. MPJA states it was the first body in Japan to certify a dedicated halal slaughterhouse, opening the way for halal meat exports, and it also operates an e-learning platform for halal training.

Frequently asked questions

Is MPJA recognised by JAKIM?

Yes. Muslim Professional Japan Association (MPJA) appears on JAKIM's official recognition list of international halal certification bodies, gazetted under Malaysia's Trade Descriptions (Certification and Marking of Halal) Order 2011, as at 30 January 2026.

What does JAKIM recognition mean for MPJA?

JAKIM (Department of Islamic Development Malaysia) is widely regarded as the industry's most influential halal authority. Its recognition means halal certificates issued by MPJA are accepted for products entering Malaysia, and it serves as a strong third-party credibility signal in the global halal trade.

Where is MPJA based?

Muslim Professional Japan Association (MPJA) is based in Japan at Yoshioka Bldg 3F 4-32-1 Yotsuya Shinjuku-ku Tokyo 160-0004 Japan.

Does MPJA audit directly against JAKIM or BPJPH standards?

No. MPJA audits against its own standard, which heavily incorporates JAKIM and BPJPH requirements, and its own fatwa committee makes the final decision on each halal certification.

Must a factory employ Muslim staff or be fully halal to qualify?

Muslim employment is not required for factories, and MPJA runs seminars to train non-Muslim employees, although slaughterhouses must employ trained Muslim slaughtermen. Depending on on-site conditions, certification may also be granted on a production-line basis rather than for the whole premises.

What is MPJA Muslim Friendly certification?

It is a separate program from full halal product certification, granted to restaurants and hotels in Japan that meet MPJA requirements for serving Muslim guests.
