About JHA

The NPO Japan Halal Association (JHA) is a nonprofit halal certification body based in Osaka, Japan, established in 2010. Operating as an independent third party, it certifies that products and services offered by Japanese companies meet halal requirements, and it supplements this core work with training activities, including seminars on Muslim hospitality and halal management that it has run since 2011.

The association conducts audits for four certification types: products and raw materials, slaughter, restaurants and kitchens, and warehousing and transport. In 2019 it developed its own certification standard, JHAS1002:2019, which draws together the certification requirements of major halal importing countries, and it uses this standard in its certification audits. The association introduced remote audit systems in 2021, and its certified client list includes major Japanese manufacturers such as Meiji, Yakult, and Saraya.

Its international standing has been built up in stages. JAKIM approval came in 2012, followed by MUIS in Singapore in 2013. In 2016 it became the first halal certification organization in Japan accredited by GAC for the Gulf countries, and in 2017 it received accreditation from the UAE authority ESMA, with MOIAT now listed among its approvals. Mutual recognition was concluded with CICOT of Thailand in 2018 and THIDA of Taiwan in 2020, while Indonesian acceptance came through MUI in 2019 and BPJPH in 2024, and Turkey’s HAK approved the body in 2024. The association also received the MIHAS Innovation Award in 2015.
