About KBHC

The Kenya Bureau of Halal Certification (KBHC) is a not-for-profit halal certifier based at Village Plaza on Ngara Road in Nairobi, Kenya. Founded in 2007, it was set up to ensure that Muslims in Kenya consume lawful products that comply with Islamic dietary requirements, and it is governed by a Board of Trustees drawn from 14 Islamic institutions in Nairobi, among them the Jamia Mosque Committee, the Al-Momin Foundation, the Ummah Foundation, and Parklands Mosque.

KBHC certifies slaughtering operations and food production, covering red meat abattoirs handling cattle, sheep, and goats as well as poultry plants that slaughter chicken and process products such as sausages, nuggets, and burger patties. Its method rests on continuous monitoring from source to consumer, with trained inspectors carrying out ongoing checks rather than one-off audits. The organization reports having served more than 1,500 clients, a figure that comes from its own published materials.

On the global stage, KBHC joined the World Halal Council as an associate member in 2008 and became a full member in February 2013. In April 2013 it secured recognition from Malaysia’s halal authority, which means meat and processed food exported from Kenya to the Malaysian market must carry KBHC approval. Beyond certification, the body runs public education on halal and haram issues and works with industry to build compliance capacity in the Kenyan market.
