About JSMO
The Jordan Standards and Metrology Organization (JSMO) is Jordan’s national standards body, a government authority established in 1995 as the successor to a standards directorate that had operated since 1972. Its mandate covers national standards, technical regulations, legal metrology, and market surveillance of products placed on the Jordanian market. Halal certification sits within this wider public mandate as one of the conformity assessment services JSMO operates, which distinguishes it from private certifiers: it is a state institution certifying against national standards.
JSMO grants the Jordanian halal logo and certificate to food producers, primarily to support the export of Jordanian food products to international markets. Certification is assessed against Jordanian Standard JS 2060 on general halal food requirements and JS 1475 on use of the term halal, and applicants must run a food safety management system conforming to JS 1716 or ISO 22000. Certificates are valid for three years with annual surveillance audits, and shipment level halal certificates are issued for exports once a producer holds the halal logo.
Jordan is a member state of the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC), the OIC standards body behind the OIC/SMIIC halal standards, with JSMO serving as its member institution. JSMO also participates in the ISO, the Codex Alimentarius Commission, and the OIML. Its status in the Malaysian registry reflects recognition between national authorities, and JSMO has publicly cited that acceptance as strengthening the position of Jordanian halal products abroad.

What does JAKIM recognition mean for JSMO?
