About INNORPI

The Institut National de la Normalisation et de la Propriete Industrielle (INNORPI) is Tunisia’s national institute for standardization and industrial property, established by Law 82-66 of 6 August 1982. It is a public institution operating under the supervision of the ministry responsible for industry, with a mandate covering standardization, product and service quality certification, and the protection of industrial property, including patents, trademarks, and industrial designs. INNORPI represents Tunisia at the International Organization for Standardization, the International Electrotechnical Commission, the Codex Alimentarius, and the World Intellectual Property Organization, and is a member of SMIIC, the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries.

In 2013 INNORPI launched the Tunisian national halal label in collaboration with Dar El Ifta, the country’s religious authority. The label is based on the SMIIC halal referential developed under the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and INNORPI verifies quality and food safety aspects, including conformity with ISO 22000, before granting it. Products certified under the label include olive oil, pasta, vegetable fats, dates, and cosmetics, with the scheme oriented toward Tunisian companies exporting to international halal markets. Certificates run for three years with annual surveillance conducted jointly by INNORPI and Dar El Ifta.

In December 2019 the label obtained recognition from JAKIM, Malaysia’s halal certification authority, opening the Malaysian market to products carrying the Tunisian halal mark. As the state standards institute that also operates the national halal mark, INNORPI occupies the position of a government authority in the halal certification landscape rather than a private certifier.
