About IFI

The Islamic Foundation of Ireland (IFI) is a Dublin based religious organization that doubles as Ireland’s longest serving halal certification body. Founded in 1959 by Muslim students as the Dublin Islamic Society, it opened the first mosque in Ireland in 1976 and has run the Dublin Mosque and Islamic Centre at 163 South Circular Road since 1983. The certification arm has operated since 1981, when IFI began certifying halal meat exported from Ireland to Muslim countries, and since around 2000 it has extended its work to dairy and other non-meat products as export markets widened their halal requirements.

IFI certifies meat and poultry, dairy, processed foods, raw materials and ingredients such as vitamin and mineral premixes, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical products. Its published process covers documentation review, a pre-audit assessment, an on-site audit carried out by two auditors, and a certification decision, with non-meat certificates typically valid for one year. For the Indonesian market it applies the Halal Product Assurance System (SJPH) criteria covering commitment, materials, process control, product specifications, and monitoring.

Beyond its Malaysian standing, IFI is recognized by the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) and describes itself as the only Irish halal certification authority recognized by the World Halal Food Council. It also self-reports recognition by the State of Qatar, past recognition by Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI), and pending applications with Indonesia’s BPJPH and Turkiye’s HAK. The organization is a registered Irish charity and remains a community institution as much as a certifier.
