Islamic Halal World Institute (Islamic Chamber Research & Information Center) (ICRIC)

The Halal World Institute is an Iranian halal certification body constituted in 2007 to promote halal culture, operating from Tehran under the Islamic Chamber Research and Information Center (ICRIC). ICRIC is an affiliated organ of the Islamic Chamber of Commerce and Development, which sits within the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation framework, and the institute also works in affiliation with the Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture. Its stated activities span halal culture building, standardization, rule making, and trade across food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and hygiene products, clothing, and services.

The institute’s certification work is grounded in the halal food standard approved by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation in 2010 and the SMIIC standards that followed; ICRIC publishes OIC/SMIIC 1, General Requirements for Halal Food, as a reference document. A Jurisprudent Committee and a Scientific Committee oversee religious and technical decisions, and the institute reports having certified nearly 2000 applicants since 2008, with branches reported in Germany, Turkey, Korea, and Japan.

JAKIM in Malaysia lists ICRIC (Halal World Institute) among its recognised overseas halal certification bodies, and ICRIC states that this recognition covers the export of food, beverages, raw materials, and consumer goods from Iran to Malaysia.
