About BPJPH
Badan Penyelenggara Jaminan Produk Halal (BPJPH), the Halal Product Assurance Organizing Body, is Indonesia’s national statutory halal authority. Established in October 2017 as an echelon I unit of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, it was created under Law No. 33 of 2014 on Halal Product Assurance, supported by Presidential Regulation No. 83 of 2015 and Minister of Religious Affairs Regulation No. 42 of 2016. With its formation, responsibility for halal certification in Indonesia moved from the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) to the state, with MUI retaining its religious role in the process alongside the Halal Inspection Bodies (LPH) that BPJPH accredits to conduct product audits.
BPJPH formulates halal assurance policy, sets standards, issues Indonesian halal certificates and the national halal label, registers certificates issued by international halal institutions, and supervises implementation. Under Law No. 33 of 2014, halal certification is mandatory for products in Indonesia on a phased schedule, with the obligation for food and beverage products taking effect on 18 October 2024 and later deadlines applying to other categories and to micro and small enterprises. Certification runs through Sihalal, the agency’s web based Halal Information System, which handles applications from domestic and international producers as well as registration of overseas certificates issued by bodies holding mutual recognition agreements with BPJPH.
As a national authority, BPJPH engages with counterpart institutions at state level. In June 2023, the governments of Indonesia and Malaysia signed a Memorandum of Cooperation on mutual recognition of halal certificates for domestic products, establishing reciprocal acceptance between certificates issued by BPJPH and by JAKIM. Its listing in JAKIM’s registry reflects this peer level recognition between the two national authorities.
