About Halal Italia
Halal Italia Srl is an Italian halal certification body established in 2009 to give Italian companies access to religious certification of an internationally recognized standard, building on halal certification activities that had operated through individual Islamic centers since the 1980s. The Italian Islamic Religious Community (COREIS) serves as its independent religious authority, with certification decisions expressed through the COREIS Halal Certification Ethics Committee. On 30 June 2010 four Italian ministries, those responsible for international affairs, economic development, health, and agricultural policies, signed an interministerial convention supporting the initiative in the presence of ambassadors from OIC countries.
The body certifies food and beverages, ritual slaughter batches for cattle, poultry, and sheep, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals, production lines, and hospitality services, while respecting EU rules on food safety and animal welfare. Its methodology combines professional Muslim inspectors with laboratory analysis, including alcohol residue and porcine DNA testing, and a Safeguard Committee for Impartiality that draws on business associations, consumer advocates, and COREIS imams. Certification proceeds from requirements verification and application through document analysis and on site inspection to certificate issuance, with preliminary feasibility checks for complex operations and slaughterhouses.
Its certificates are accepted by authorities across major halal markets. JAKIM in Malaysia has listed the body since 2017, and further approvals cover BPJPH in Indonesia from 2024, MUIS in Singapore, CICOT in Thailand, the Qatar Ministry of Public Health, EIAC and MOIAT in the United Arab Emirates, and SASO and SFDA in Saudi Arabia, alongside the Italian Ministry of Health and membership of the World Halal Council.
