About FIANZ
The Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ) is the national umbrella body of New Zealand’s Muslim community, formed in April 1979 to bring the regional Islamic associations of Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury and other centres into a single nationwide organisation. Its halal work began in June 1984, when the federation signed its first annual certification contract with the New Zealand Meat Producers Board, later the Meat Industry Association. That makes the FIANZ programme one of the longest running halal meat export schemes in the world.
Certification is delivered through FIANZ Halal Limited, which the federation describes as a wholly owned division established solely to certify halal meat plants and other halal providers in New Zealand. The company, based in Auckland, holds full approval as an Approved Halal Organisation under the Ministry for Primary Industries Halal Export Assurance Framework, the regulated system behind halal claims on New Zealand animal product exports. The MPI list dated 22 June 2026 records FIANZ listings for Algeria, Bahrain, Indonesia, Jordan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Morocco, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, covering dairy and red meat across all ten markets and poultry for several of them. For Malaysia the listed scope is dairy material and dairy products together with red meat and red meat products.
The body states that it certifies to GSO 2055-1:2015 and GSO 993:2015 alongside MPI approved codes of practice. Separate approvals cover Singapore through MUIS, Thailand through CICOT, and processed food and beverages for Indonesia, Morocco, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
